The Greater Silicon Valley Region

Silicon Valley is more than a place—it is a global center of innovation, talent, and possibility.
Home to many of the world’s leading companies, the region also represents one of the highest concentrations of engineers, scientists, software developers, data analysts, mathematicians, and entrepreneurs anywhere in the world. This extraordinary blend of technical expertise, entrepreneurial spirit, and forward-thinking leadership has helped shape industries—and transform how the world lives, works, and connects.

Long before it became the world’s technology capital, Silicon Valley was rooted in agriculture—known for its orchards, canneries, and fertile lands that powered a thriving farming economy. That spirit of cultivation—growing, adapting, and building from the ground up—remains embedded in the region’s DNA today.

Since the rise of the modern technology era in the 1960s, Silicon Valley has stood at the forefront of innovation. While there are many important centers of commerce and creativity around the globe, Silicon Valley remains distinctive—not just as a geography, but as a mindset. It is a place where bold ideas take shape, where collaboration fuels progress, and where innovation continues to redefine what’s possible.

Often referred to as The Valley or the South Bay, Silicon Valley can be defined in many ways. A widely accepted understanding includes all of Santa Clara County’s 15 cities, each contributing its own character, industries, and community strengths to the region’s collective identity. You can explore more about the county and its cities through Santa Clara County.

At the heart of Silicon Valley’s success is its network of strong, independent local chambers of commerce. Each city chamber plays a vital role in supporting its business community, advocating for local needs, and fostering economic growth. Together, through collaboration and shared purpose—such as efforts like the Silicon Valley Coalition of Chambers—these organizations help strengthen the broader regional ecosystem.
